In 1874 AD, the then royal representative of India, Northbroke Srihatta, was invited to the durbar hall (meeting room) of Srihatta. But then Sylhet's best zamindar Girishchandra Roy was disheartened by not getting an invitation to the event, and with the aim of paving the way for education in Srihattan, on June 17, 1886, Raja Girishchandra Roy along with his mother started the journey of Raja Girishchandra Secondary School named Murarichad High School to preserve the memory of Murarichad Roy. In 1892 Raja Girishchandra Roy established Murarichad College (MC College) in Murarichad High School. From then on it was called Murarichad High School (Murarichad Collegiate School). In 1896 Raja Girishchandra Roy bought the National School of Sylhet and connected it with the collegiate school. In 1912 Murarichad College moved to the present Hasan Market in place of 'Govinda Park' under government supervision (1912-1925) Murarichad Collegiate School was renamed as 'Raja Girish Chandra Madhyamik Vidyalaya'. Raja Girishchandra Vidyalaya was recognized by the Permanent Grant Commission from Calcutta University in 1920 AD.
